I’m way behind and trying to catch up but even if I have to be brief I want you to know how much I enjoy these photos. The first is a real standout but the second is awfully nice, too. I went with friends to eastern Washington last week and we saw flowers, but nothing like this! Just small, isolated blooms. Here, my favorites are the landscapes that show the lush blooms (and the palms!!) set against the rocks. I salute you for learning many of the names – they’re not easy! I still can’t sort out even the basic things like Brittlebush. What a great walk you had! Hope there are more coming….

There’s nothing quite like a desert in bloom is there. This post reminds me of when I visited Death Valley many years ago and arrived when the flowers were blooming. Such a surprise! And so beautiful, as is Anza-Borrego. I love the way you’ve captured both the many flower as well as the desert landscape.

Thank you, Alison. What a great memory and I agree, the desert blooms are surprising. There was a very hot day right before we arrived that did the Desert Primrose in- that would’ve been a treat to see.

What stunning photos of a very interesting landscape. I was quite keen on visiting the park when we used to visit San Diego, but never managed it. It looks wonderful and those spring flowers really are special.

Thanks, Jude. Seems that many people make a day trip from San Diego. The park is pretty desolate and huge. I was glad to finally see it, especially in this rare super bloom. Glad you enjoyed!

Jane – this was such a floral treat and my dabs might be the poppies or the Silver Cholla.
Also- seeing the hikers really added a nice touch near the end of the post- bringing humans into it made it all more inviting

I’m glad you enjoyed these, Yvette. It was fun to photograph. That Silver Cholla got me when I leaned in too close to shoot the bloom. My knee was full of spikes – got them out ok but learned my lesson! I do love including humans on the landscape to give some relatable perspective. Thanks so much for looking. 🙂

ouch with the spikes in the knee – a long time I ago I got cactus spike and the area stayed red and swollen for a long time – ugh
LikeLiked by 1 person
Interesting you say that. I have a circle of red dots and I’m wondering if there are still minute pieces of spikes in there!

Oh wow, I wonder if there are pieces left – but it could just be the chemicals they secrete
I think I used baking soda to initially draw out the toxins.
Then, I think I soaked the hand in warm salt water and used fresh aloe vera on and off –
my mother has huge aloe plants and I would later it on –
– not sure if you ca soak the knee – but I would try to “draw out” anything by warming it and opening the pores.
—
oh and activated charcoal might work great too – it can just get messy to use – but nothing has the “drawing out” properties like activated charcoal. We buy it by the bag in powder – but also use the capsules and just open one or two if needed
best wishes with your knee (and I do love the stories photographers share as they take such creative photos)

Thanks for the good advice, Yvette! Wondered if they secrete chemicals given the redness.

How beautiful! It looks very similar to what I saw a few days ago in Tonto National Forest. I’m going to California next weekend and thought about stopping at this park on the way back but as I only have the day, I think it’s a bit too much. 🥲

Thanks, Janet. I looked up Tonto-beautiful! AZ is having a similar super bloom. Exciting. It took us many years to get to Anza. It’s 1.5 hours from Palm Springs. Closer to San Diego. Agree, probably too much for one day. 😦

Thanks very much, Eliza. What a different environment compared to the Poppy region. Fascinating. The rangers we met along the way said they’d never seen such a great bloom. Unfortunately, the Bighorn Sheep had moved to another canyon with their lambs. Was hoping for a sighting. Pleased you enjoyed these desert blooms!

Such a beautiful medley of colors in “Britlebush and Phacelia”. We are lucky to have Phacelia popping up as volunteers as we try to encourage natives to return to our small slice of ground at the edge of the forest and the nearby ocean. Our blooms are a bit slow to show up this year given the nearly nonstop rains and occasional freezes we’ve had these last several months. We seem to be a good two weeks behind on the flower schedule when comparing to pics of what was blooming earlier at this time last year and the year before.
Friends of ours spent roughly 3 months down at Anza Borego, missing a good part of the winter rains we’ve been having. But they did miss out on the SNOW on the beach around Christmas! Wouldn’t have wanted to miss that. What I do miss is that they managed to stay where they had tens of thousands of desert acres pretty much all to themselves… I may have to eventually give in to the travel itch one of these days… 😲
Thanks for sharing the beauty… 💞🤗 Before I get too old or lazy. 🙄

Hi Gunta, The weather has been relatively cool and the blooms are thriving. There was a very hot day in Anza right before we arrived that killed the Desert Primrose- was sorry not to see them. Sounds like you will have a great bloom in the coming weeks. I was fascinated with life in Borrego-Springs. Lots of RV campers in the desert which is vast and desolate. There was a sandstorm on our way out with the wind whipping – not very hospitable.Glad you enjoyed the photos – a very different feel compared to the poppies. Thanks so much!

Exquisite as always, Jane. Did all the heavy rain in the last few months help create this super bloom? Of course I was there for the rain and not the bloom!

Thanks so much, Lex. Yes, all the elements came together after the storms for super blooms across the state. I’m trying to hit as many as I can! Happy you enjoyed this unusual state park. Have you been to Anza?

My comment was misleading … I was in CA for the rains but not that specific park. (Silly to lump all of CA together, I know!)

Haha! It is a huge state and Anza is enormous! The largest state park in CA. Felt quite desolate in certain areas.
