When Great Trees Fall
by Maya Angelou
***
When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.
In remembrance of those lost in senseless acts of violence.
Had to return to this one. It touched me deeply not long after you posted, but… computer software crashes kept me too busy (& frustrated) to comment back then.
I still have trouble finding the words and thoughts you gave us on this sad occasion…
Thanks, as always, Jane!

What an amazing combination….your photos and Maya Angelou’s poetry. Just stunning, Jane and so powerful. Monochrome is perfect to evoke the strength, beauty, and fragility of these magnificent trees. Human life…is just as beautiful, strong, and fragile. A great photo essay….truly.

Thanks so much, Patti, for your reflection on this. It’s cathartic to create when there’s such a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness when these tragedies occur. Time and time again. 💔

A lovely study in black and white. It seems like a condemnation of senseless acts and words of violence would be a simple black and white question as well.

Brilliant, Jane. There you go again, tackling a big question with the ease of someone who’s gained wisdom from her years on the planet. Although the poem can encompass people – or other beings, like trees – that lived anywhere on the planet, the progression of California trees makes a beautiful connection to the recent tragedies in your state. The first photograph, of that tree (Eucalyptus?) behind a rainy window may be my favorite. It achieves a perfect balance between sadness and hope. I love ‘Unity’ too and the sky behind that Joshua tree makes a really nice frame for that photo. It was a tough week for coastal Californians. This tribute is a healing response.

This final stanza takes my breath away because I desperately want to believe the words Maya writes. I want to believe that peace will bloom and we will change…Listening to the evening news each night my hope erodes 😦
