All Fall Down

“A wind has blown the rain away and blown the sky away and all the leaves away, and the trees stand. I think, I too, have known autumn too long.”

~e.e. cummings

  1. Wow… if there is ever a collage of the different feelings autumn can bring to the soul, this is it 🙂 Beautiful collection, Jane. Your photo of “Floating” reminds me of the beautiful change of the season when all colors compete – and there is still the green to feel fresh. It reminded me of the times I’ve seen similar patterns and wished I had my camera :-). But your finale is the one that captures the feel of autumn to me… brilliant capture of the spectrum of fall.

    • Thank you, Randall. So nice to read. I become obsessed with the autumn leaves and love to find pleasing piles of them! It’s the little things… 🙂 The frame of fall colors that you mentioned was one of those aha moments of seeing something beautiful. Hope your new year is off to a great start! 🙂

  3. Fantastic! Thanks for capturing the glory of these trees in autumn, Jane, especially since now when I am viewing your post it is two weeks later and most of the trees are bare. I have been enjoying the liquidambars all autumn, and gingkos never cease to amaze me, so this series was especially dazzling to me. I live in a new area this year and have had the pleasure of gingkos around me for a new change, and I find them so delightful. So I really enjoyed all of your photos here, but my favorite was Gingko Dreaming for its unusual angle and peaceful dreaminess.

    • So nice to read your reaction to this series, Jet. Thanks very much. I recently learned the scientific name of the Sweet Gum so that was a nice bit of education this fall. SoCal is full of Ginkgos which light up the streets in autumn. I can hardly walk past them without shooting a photo! Pleased you enjoyed this leafy homage to autumn. I hope you are enjoying your new digs! 🍁🤗

  5. Yea, Ginkgos! All of these are very good (the Sweetguns remind me of NY) but the ginkgos excite me the most. I love the carpet. You must have worked hard to achieve that eveness across the frame. It’s so good! The rain-spattered leaves with the single green leaf is another fine image with a wonderful tonal range. The black and white is terrific. I love that you’ve observed these trees close enough to notice the way the leaves are attached to the branches, then you focused on that structure (Dreaming). The branch structure is something I’ve always liked about the species.
Ginkgo at Rest is my favorite – it’s perfection. The leaves look pretty against that cool background and the photo showcases aspects I’ve always liked about Ginkgo leaves – the way water beads up on them, the way they curl at the edges, the fan shapes that sometimes have indentations, the veins, the subtle variations in color…and Joe stopped in and said you must be OK when he saw that photograph. 🙂

  18. Ginko is one of my favorite trees in the fall. “Ginko Carpet” is very neat and my favorite. We got a few young ginko trees in our community but not big enough to form a “carpet”.

  22. Is it too bad we don’t have fall colors year around, or is it better because it causes us to appreciate them more?

  23. These are marvelous, Jane. I like the e.e. cummings quote. I didn’t know what a gingko tree looked like until we moved to Illinois. There was one right by the library and I’m at any library quite a lot. 🙂 Autumn in Arizona only arrived recently and only in small amounts but it’s been very much appreciated. Have a wonderful week.

    • Thank you, Janet. I loved that quote, too… so fitting. As kids on the east coast, we called them “stinkos” because of their pungent fruit that drops everywhere. They are gorgeous trees in autumn. Glad you’ve gotten some fall color in Arizona. Enjoy! 🙂 🍁
