Wonderful post. One of my ten favourite cities in the world…
Magnificent pictures.
I’ve seen that street art on the high line last year. I had to find stairs to go down to the avenue, take the pic, go back up. LOL.
We have walked the same streets definitely.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours… 🤗

Thank you, Andy. That early morning image was a thrill…it appeared to be in monochrome with that light and had a vintage feel like old New York. Glad you like it! 🙂

These are wonderful, Jane. Makes me sorry I dislike being in a city, any city much less one as huge as NYC, as I do. I am sure that you are familiar with Jay Maisel and like him you’ve shown that there are endless possibilities there. And, as always, your found some perfect quotes to accompany the fine photography.

Thank you so much, Steve. I understand your feelings about big cities…they can feel chaotic. I love Jay Maisel’s work (I have his book, “Light, Gesture and Color”) and your comparison makes my day. He’s inspiring. I’m pleased you enjoyed this collection along with the quotes. I know you are enjoying nature’s peace in MA right now. 🙂

Each photo is so strong it is hard to single out any one, though I love how in ‘A Tree Grows in NY’ each reflective framed window becomes a work of art in its own right.
The Arbus quote is fascinating – I am pondering how taking a photograph can at times feel like a surreptitious act of stealing (and whether that is delicious or not!). (Perhaps that we say ‘taking’ a photograph rather than ‘making’ a photograph reinforces the point?)

Hi Carol, Thanks so much for your response. I was captivated by that curving tree and its juxtaposition against those reflections…I’m pleased you noticed that. The feeling I get when making an image is capturing something delicious and special that I alone saw in that split second. I tiptoe away from the moment feeling sated. I think that’s what I take away from that great quote by Arbus. 🙂

This is a wonderful set Jane! I love so many of them. ‘Water Tower’ is a strong opener … what a great vantage point with city lights near and far. ‘Window Reflections is fabulous. I love the bright colorful compartments … like a shadow box! ‘A Tree Grows in NY’ was a great find. The geometry of the building along with the curved branch create a great contrast.

Thank you, Denise- that means a lot. I was fixated on that water tower…I just love seeing them on rooftops in NYC. And I am always drawn to windows, especially at night. The stories behind them… Happy you enjoyed this collection. 🙂

The views you captured of the city lights at night are brilliant. However, i love the your more abstract images of the Gehry and Oculus. Well done, Jane … and have a bountiful Thanksgiving week.

The Arbus quote is a real surprise (though maybe not so much when I think of what she’s known for photographing) and I love the Didion quote. But most of all I love your love for the city. 😉 It certainly shows! I’ve photographed that Gehry building, too, so I love your take on it. What a nice juxtaposition. The colors and details in the first photo are wonderfully alive. Seeing the second one makes me wonder how they could have both been made from the same place, assuming you made them from where you stayed. But maybe not. And the skyline has changed so much. Night windows does what the first photo does, only even more so – it really turns on that curiosity switch and makes you wonder about all those lives. “Window Reflection” does that, too. The Oculus photo provides a nice counterpoint to all the busyness of the night photos. The curving branch may actually be my favorite, partly because it looks so familiar: that intersection of nature and the built environment that I always have loved to see in cities. Perfectly composed! That little building with the white car in front around the corner from the office building – those older, small buildings are always a relief, aren’t they? The Highline image has that depth that always pulls you through NYC scenes. “Goodnight America” or Goodnight New Jersey? 😉 Great work, Jane!

Hi Lynn, Your responses always make my day. Thank you! Windows always fascinate me – the tree and windows I am sure you found familiar- shot in the village. And the newer buildings are quite amazing to see, especially at night. The skyline shots seen in two different directions from our hotel on very different weather days. I saw that morning shot in B&W- the scene and light had a vintage feel. And I can’t believe you noticed that little white car! I smiled when I saw it in the image. Thank goodness the older buildings are preserved. I like your title Good Night NJ better, since I am a Jersey native! 🙂

Your photos capture the vibrancy and energy of New York so well, yet my favourite I think is the early morning shot, the most peaceful of them. I also love ‘Gehry and Lamppost’, ‘Chili Cheese, Please’ and the tree (a shame it wasn’t in Brooklyn!)
