“The great rocks of Yosemite, expressing qualities of timeless yet intimate grandeur, are the most compelling formations of their kind. We should not casually pass them by, for they are the very heart of the earth speaking to us.”
~Ansel Adams

I own a few early stereoviews of Yosemite from 150 years ago (Carleton Watkins, among others). Great to see your images of the park and it’s amazing to think how many decades of inspiration photographers have drawn from it.

The stereoviews must be fascinating, John. I’m in awe when I view Carleton Watkins work. Thanks for viewing my images, inspired by many who have come before – that means a lot. 😊

You’ve done a wonderful job with your compositions both in color and B&W. I like how you utilized the tree shadows as leading lines in ‘Shadows, El Capitan’. The isolated reflection in ‘Nature Bath’ is an inviting composition too! Great job Jane.

Thanks so much, Denise. As glorious as the colors are there, I can’t help but to see in black and white when shooting. So glad you enjoyed these landscapes. 🙂

So lovely to catch these iconic favorites without the smothering crowds. I’m impressed that you managed to make these well known images look all fresh and beautiful. If I must pick a favorite, it would be Rock Face and Trees… The shapes and textures come alive in that one. 💞

Thank you, Gunta. The crowds were gone, thankfully. It was quite peaceful and we were often alone on our hikes. I do love the rock faces with their textures and trees, and sometimes a climber or two which are almost impossible to see. Glad you enjoyed! 🙂

You set a high bar by opening with an Ansel Adams quote and then showing a Yosemite image but you achieved the goal. The first black and white is beautifully done. I like the way the tall, straight evergreens reach up toward the rock in the center. ‘Morning Light’ has all of the grandeur Yosemite is known for. ‘Shadows’ takes a completely different approach and succeeds. I like the way the shadows, trees, and rock are all moving upward together in the frame. The quiet colors and textures on the rock in ‘Half Dome’ are so carefully shown – that’s a beauty! In ‘Morning Peace’ I feel like I’m being shown a more private, intimate space, which is a nice counterpart to the grand vistas. The rock face with all the “tiny” trees on it reminds me of something similar I saw (and tried to photograph!) at Zion. The Ponderosa pine bark photo just frustrates me, Jane, because I want to smell that fragrance! 😉 (It’s nicely paired with the cool rock above it). And a nature bath instead of a forest bath, yes! That crystal-clear water certainly is tempting! Great set, Jane, you must be pleased with these. They bring out the aspects of the park that must have moved people to preserve it – magnificent, varied scenery with no signs of humans around. 🙂

Hi Lynn, Yeah, I guess I did set the bar high… I can’t help but have Ansel in my head when I’m there…often seeing scenes in black and white with their contrasts and shadows. And embracing the magnificent colors at the same time. I’d say it’s rather overwhelming! We lucked out with very few humans mucking up our time. 🙂 Your reaction to the individual images makes my day– thank you very much!

It’s great that you didn’t have to deal with crowds, which gave you space to think about what you were doing. It can be very difficult to work with such well-known subjects but you rose to the occasion. Now, on to the holiday rush! 🙂

You bring this place alive with your photos, Jane. One of my favorites in this series is the one you have of the: Morning Light, Cathedral Rocks. The Cathedral Rocks I read when I was young, but it was just a description with no photo so forever I had an image in mind… your photo is as close to this image in my mind as I’ve ever seen. Beautiful.

These are absolutely glorious. Yosemite is glorious, and you’ve captured it in all its grandeur. I love that quote from Ansel Adams, and your b&w pics remind me very much of his, especially Half Dome Grandeur, and Morning Peace. Beautiful.

Thanks, Tim. Yes, I couldn’t resist another batch. One issue is that the road to Glacier Point is closed for this entire year, so that nixed some of the favorite spots. Glad you enjoyed them and perhaps there will be more. 🙂

I so love Yosemite. It was the highlight of our California road trip 50 years ago. I seem to remember there was a waterfall there? Is it gone?
Thanks for the trip back Jane.
