“Nobody sees a flower – really – it is so small it takes time – we haven’t time – and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.”
~ Georgia O’Keeffe
These flower portraits were made at Descanso Gardens, La Cañada Flintridge, CA.
So beautiful Jane. Ours are out at the moment and their beauty is so poignant with all the ugliness and pain that we are witnessing at the moment.

My mom had a camellia bush in her greenhouse for many years. Initially, she would bring it inside for the winter But, that was when the plant was manageable in size. When it became too big, it had to stay in the greenhouse. Even bought a kerosene heater for those tenders that became too big to bring inside. I think it bit the dust during a brutal cold spell despite covering the plant and running the heater.

This is the perfect post for me to take in this Friday morning. A look at the beauty nature provide, and the opening quote so essential these days: “Nobody sees a flower – really – it is so small it takes time – we haven’t time – and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.” This reminder along with the perfect shot of “My Buddy” puts a smile on my day. Thank you, Jane.

We tried to grow camellias once a number of years back. No success which is unfortunate as I gaze upon your lovely images of them, Jane.

Hi Steve, This garden has a large camellia grove–it’s amazing to see all the different varieties. They are probably tricky to grow. Happy you enjoyed these– you know how intense it gets with close-up photography…I do love getting lost in it. Thanks so much– sorry for the late reply. 🙂

Ah, sweet Camelias, and that O’Keefe quote is the best. 😉 I saw one in bloom up here the other day in a yard somewhere. It looks like you had quite a variety to photograph! The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have a lovely quality to the light. My favorites for sure are the fallen flowers, the one inside the calla lily, wow! So cool! And the one on the branch is really beautiful. I like the black and white, too. What a delight to see these colors!

Gorgeous and luscious, Jane! Every single one. If I HAD to choose… it might be the Pink and Proud, but they’re all astounding. Must admit that “Calla and Camellia” stopped me in my tracks for a few moments… Are you messing with us? 🤔😉

Always great! It is camellia time in Charleston as well. We have four large bushes/trees around our new cottage and they are incredible. And now the plantations (Middleton and Magnolia) are in bloom with azaleas and camellias. Wonderful to see your great photos of west coast camellias!
