“It’s gonna be a long Monday

Stuck like the tick of a clock

That’s come unwound – again

And again”

Helsinki Blues

“When I woke up this morning, things were lookin’ bad

Seem like total silence was the only friend I had

Bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down… and won

And it was twelve o’clock before I realized

That I was havin’ no fun…”

Rainy Day

“Sometimes my old heart is like a washing machine

It bounces around ’til my soul comes clean

And when I’m clean and hung out to dry

I’m gonna make you laugh until you cry.

Surround me with your boundless love

Confound me with your boundless love

I was drowning in the sea, lost as I could be

When you found me with your boundless love”

Boundless Love, John Prine

Boundless Love

“Well you never know how far from home you’re feeling

Until you watch the shadows cross the ceiling

Well I don’t know but I can see it snowing

In your car the windows are wide open.

Just come on home

Come on home

No you don’t have to be alone

Just come on home”

Summer’s End,  John Prine

  8. Excellent selection of lyrics, Jane. It’s hard to pick bad ones, isn’t it? He was a master. Also a fine collection of images as always. Happy Easter to you and your family. Stay safe too. California seems to be doing a bit better than much of the rest.

    • Thanks, Steve. You are right, he was a master songwriter and storyteller. Glad you enjoyed the images paired. Happy Easter with good wishes for continued safety and good health. In CA we started a bit earlier than many (going into six weeks) and I think that may have helped.

  9. I remember an interview he did years ago, which he didn’t do many of, he said making the jump from mailman to songwriting was a natural one. While on the route, you see and hear so many things. And, visiting with many along the way, the many stories could easily become a song. A wonderful tribute.

  16. A sweet tribute. Seems like we’re losing so much. At least Prine’s songs remain to sustain us (along with your images.)

  23. Wonderful pictures again Jane. I shamefully have to admit I hadn’t heard of John Prine before he died. Now I’m listening to his records on Spotify and I really like what I hear. The song: Summer’s end is truly great.

    • Hi Peter, I’m so glad this led you to discovering him. His early records have many of his enduring hits but the songs in the past few years are quite beautiful- including Summer’s End. His lyrics…
