  1. I like the way you partner the striking photos with the sobering quotations.

  2. Hear hear! And you quoted our “gov.” 🙂 I love what you did with “Blinded.” Smoky skies can make great photographs, but it’s not he way we want things to go, is it?

  3. The flaming sky photo is spectacular, but I really like your creativity and lighting of the ‘blinds’ ~ beautiful skies simply make the day, even though the reasons for such beauty is so destructive. Wish you well ~

    • Thanks very much, Randall, especially for your appreciation of Blinded. As you know, it’s satisfying when a creative moment is realized.
The fires have gotten under control for now, thankfully. Hoping I won’t have any more hazy sunsets to shoot.

  4. Lovely pictures and apt quotes. It often amazes me how the same species can be so technically smart, but yet so stupid at the same time.

  5. Your photos are lovely colorful – the quotes paired well to stir up thinking about the environment and our care for it….

  6. It is scary to try to follow what is happening on the news. We don’t get much here, and I wonder how much they are sensationalizing it. “HOLLYWOOD ON FIRE” Doesn’t help anyone understand what is happening. At first I thought this was a result of 50 years of fire suppression, but do I understand that it is just as often towns on fire?
Your images are heartbreakingly beautiful. Like others, Blinded is my favorite.
I cannot express how sorry I am that this is happening.

  7. Powerful quote by Einstein: “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” Beautiful pictures, but also scary.

  10. Gorgeous compositions and colors, Jane, especially “Blinded.” Sadly that word applies to those motivated by greed and not protection of our future. I think Jane Goodall could have it wrong about us being so clever.

  13. Firstly, I’m covered in goosebumps and have tears in my eyes. You’ve moved my heart this morning, Jane. I do all I can do to encourage others to become aware of the crisis our world is experiencing and so many times, my encouragement, my example, fall on deaf ears and blind eyes. LOVE the color scheme in this post …. between the reds in the sky and the colors …. extremely well coordinated. Thank you for continuing the message that says, folks, we are in trouble and it is up to US to do something about it. Every little thing counts too!! Bless you!

  16. Beautiful pictures, Jane. Especially like Blinded and the panorama – but the wildfires are really something else – I’ve good friends there, and I’m relieved to hear that they are at present at least far from any of the fires. A

  19. Striking photographs, but the immediate and longer term situation is so alarming. I try to be hopeful and think we can right the ship, but in truth we’re destroying what sustains all life at a rate that’s beyond recovery. Future generations (if there are any) will look back in utter disbelief that we didn’t meet our moral obligation…

    • You are so right, Adam. The devastating losses of habitat and species are frightening and we will be remembered as the generation who did nothing. Ugh. I hated typing that. Thank you for commiserating with me. I know how important this is to you, too.

  21. I watched a BBC documentary about the fires around the town of Paradise “camp fire” in 2018 It was an unbelievable scene, I had tears in my eyes listening to the experiences of people trying to escape to safety.

  22. I’d say the sky looks really beautiful, but knowing it is due to the fires it’s somewhat terrible.

  31. Oh dear oh dear…I saw some of these kind of fires and the heavy smoke in the Pantanal, BR and I complained the smoke was not good for my shots and then felt guilty, so guilty when my guide said: how do you think the animals feel?…I could have buried myself in shame.

  32. We hear about the fires every day – and hope you stay safe. Great series – but sad soul. The quotes are very fitting. We are indeed blinded. And stupid. Not the magnificent species we are said to be.

  39. Great photography Jane but if it’s as a result of the fires your home State is experiencing then very sad. The quotes you chose are very true and powerful but I see little action from the governments of the world to change this mess.

    • Hi Brian, We haven’t been as affected by poor air quality in the city this year, unlike our poor neighbors to the north and folks in LA. It seem that our lousy politics have gotten in the way of sensible responses to scientific fact. Thank very much for viewing- the effects of the haze can be dazzling.

  40. Some of the most wonderful sunset images are made as a result of wildfires. It’s a sad relationship. Your shots are all beautiful examples of that unfortunate phenomenon. All the quotes are so appropriate too. One would think the human race, supposedly the smartest and most highly developed of all creatures upon this planet, would have learned to live more harmoniously with the Earth’s systems. Sometimes I think the question about our demise will be whether we go out with a whimper or a bang. 😦
    Lovely images all though. 🙂

  42. Terrific sunsets, but they’re so spooky. We had our share several years running. It’s no fun living with and breathing it. Sadly this seems to be the new normal. Still, we get to enjoy the sunsets and try not to think of the lives being destroyed. 😟
