I Only Have A Minute

“I only have a minute.

Sixty seconds in it.

Forced upon me, I did not choose it,

But I know that I must use it.

Give account if I abuse it.

Suffer, if I lose it.

Only a tiny little minute,

But eternity is in it.”

~Elijah Cummings

  1. Love the photos and the Elijah Cummings quotes are timely and timeless!

  2. Thank you Jane for your inspiring tribute to a truly great man; such a loss at this pivotal time in history. Warm wishes.

  3. Now this is a collection of some of the best, most honest smiles 🙂 Great candid photos, and also in celebrating the life of Elijah Cummings.

  4. Oh wait, yes of COURSE I know who this is. A brave, gracious man.

    • Hi Melissa, I’m glad you’re familiar. A genuine leader who will be missed.

      • It feels like we are losing quite a few, leaving us with the idiots.

        • Sadly true but, hopefully, that will change.

          • Yesterday I attended a nature conference. One of the speakers was an older man, the former head of a very prominent landscaping company in Chicago. He spoke of his early memories of growing up around Chicago where the ecosystems were still intact. The early death of his father thrust him into the family business but he always had his eye on the nature that he remembered. Now in his 60’s, he’s bought 60 somewhat degraded acres in Wisconsin and has restored them! By himself. And he has launched a new company that plants natives. He is still a primo designer, but he will only use natives. Hearing him speak I was filled with a sense of hope I haven’t felt in quite awhile.

          • What a marvelous experience, Melissa. Thanks so much for sharing this with me. :)There’s a lot of good out there as challenging as it is to see it some days.

          • Thank you Jane. I agree, and it really helps to hear good news.

  5. This is wonderfully inspiring. I am not familiar with Elijah Cummings~thank you for this moving tribute and for making me aware of him.

  6. Such beautiful photos. So thoughtful and evocative. The people come alive for me.

  7. Dear Jane,
GREAT pictures and quotes. This combination is well chosen and very moving. Actually, you made us aware of liberal politician Elijah Cummings who died a fortnight ago.
    Wishing you a great week

    • Thank you so much, Klausbernd. Yes, Elijah’s death is a great loss. He was beloved in his city of Baltimore. I’m pleased you enjoyed the photos along with his inspirational quotes. 🙂

      • Your combination of photo and text is really special. We very much enjoyed it.

        • That means a lot to me. When I read that Elijah recited that poem to himself every day, I was so inspired to think about images that convey the importance of “being in the moment”. Thanks again, Klausbernd. 🙂 I hope the Fab Four are all well and happy.

          • Dear Jane,
thank you very much. We are quite excited already because our Master’s birthday is coming up in three weeks. Traditionally we plan a trip then. This time we are going to Rye which is supposed England’s most romantic town.
Actually, there is nothing more important than being in the moment. We try hard to do so and sometimes we even succeed. Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma are very good at it.
We hope you are well and happy too and send you the finest fairy dust and wish you all the best

  22. Wow! A beautiful collection of people! My favourite is “Love”!! And that great shot of you and Imogen! We just got another grand-daughter on October 11 … “Ellie” Priscilla Joy Stewart.

  23. The poem marries a serious message with such a charming, simple rhythm. Very clever! And your photos run the gamut – I especially like “Listen” because it’s so familiar to me after living in NYC, and also “Play” for those perfect expressions and the luscious color.

  24. A very special tribute Jane. My favorites of course are those with little Imogen

  25. Powerful quotes and marvellous photos, Jane.

  26. Unquestionably, Jane, your post hands down is a Masterpiece! Your stunning photographs each depicting life in such a positive light give the reader hope that our great nation will be saved from the depths of depravity that are being bombed down upon us. Your tribute to such a great man moved me to tears. We the people have every responsibility, no matter the “role” we find ourselves in, to educate and encourage the youth that will some day be our leaders. It is more then time for us to stop listening to the trash thrown at us at every turn and instead, begin to bridge the gape that lies between so many of us. Incredible post! If the reader is not moved after he or she reads this, I don’t know what it will take.
Your images are so crystal clear and depict so much emotion ….. amazing shots!!!

  41. What a marvelous and moving tribute to this giant of a man. I love Elijah’s poem and wonderful quotes interspersed between your inspiring photos.

  42. Be Joyful❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  43. It’s true that Elijah Cummings said those words, but he was reciting a poem from memory. He didn’t write it, and I haven’t found out who did, but I located an occurrence of the poem in 1914, decades before he was born:

A book in 1938 attributed the poem to the Catholic priest Nelson H. Baker:

I can’t tell if that’s accurate. Baker may have recited the poem just as Elijah Cummings did.

    • Hi Steve, Yes, I am well aware he didn’t write it but he recited it daily as a personal inspiration, so it’s apt to attribute it to him upon his death.
As always, your research is impeccable.
