This post makes my heart happy. I’ve only spent one day at Point Reyes, but it is one of my favorite days ever. I’d dreamed of seeing that iconic lighthouse for years, however we arrived to find it closed during our visit.
Disappointment turned into delight when we instead took a 6-mile hike through the Tule Elk refuge during mating season and were treated to incredible wildlife sightings that included at least 40 elk (lots of bugling from the bulls), not-so-shy coyotes, a sea lion on the beach, and of course birds.
On CBS Sunday morning two days ago, their “moment of nature” subject was Point Reyes. I like to think some of those calves they showed were being cooked up during our visit last fall 😉
Hi Marsi- I’m so happy that you had such a wonderful time in Pt. Reyes. (sorry about the lighthouse) It’s a magical place as you have beautifully described. The beaches are wild and the landscapes fabulous.
I have my CBS Sunday mornings saved — a favorite part of the show– can’t wait to see! Thanks so much for your great comments.
Thank you, Susan. This was a wonderful day at Chimney Rock- have you been? The cows were particularly amusing this day…I don’t usually photograph them much and I just love the thistles. Glad you enjoyed these. 🙂
Hi Jane, I have not been to Chimney Rock, but our son was married at Chimney Rock Winery twenty four years ago today (yikes!). I’m thinking it was named after this place.
Hi Lynn, Thank you! Some captions are just too fun to resist. Glad you enjoyed this series- the cows really charmed me this trip but the ocean and cliffs are always calling. Your thoughts are much appreciated, as always. 🙂
Thanks so much, Steve. I’m glad that opening shot grabbed you. For me it conveys the feel of walking through those grasses to the vista point.
And #4 certainly could be a nod to Garrison but he wasn’t in my thoughts, really. 😉
Appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
gorgeous photos!! Chimney Rock Overlook kinda reminds me of Big Sur. I looked it up on a map and it looks like it’s near Point Reyes- that’s on my bucket list! So beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Jane!
Hi Mackenzie, Yes! Dramatic cliffs not as high as Big Sur but a similar feel. Chimney Rock is in Point Reyes and is a popular and easy hike to the point – a big whale watching and wildflower spot. Glad these sparked your curiosity- thank you!
Hi Jo, I assume you mean cows…there are a number of historic working dairy farms on Pt. Reyes. We drink milk from there. 🙂
I’m happy you enjoyed this-blissful, indeed. Thank you!
I enjoyed this varied collection! Wave Layers is a lovely photograph – I’ve tried and tried to capture surf layers but don’t have the eye/skill/technical ability. And No. 451 is such a sweet picture.
Thanks, Jane!
Thanks very much, Adam. I am rather obsessed with waves lately. The wind and surf were wild! I shot this with my 90mm prime (135mm with crop sensor) so it condensed the landscape into a more layered or flattened effect. And I shoot on continuous mode to catch a whole series which is cool to look at in sequence. And that new little calf was certainly a bright spot in the day. Glad you enjoyed these!
One of my favorite places in entire world, as you know. I especially like the monochromes, and especially the bathing cows, which I’ve never seen before.
Thanks so much, Michael. It’s a magical place, isn’t it? I don’t usually spend much time on the cows but when I saw them in the water, that stopped me- I’d never seen that before either.
Thank you, Eliza. Along with the vast acres of fields and cliffs, there are a number of historic working dairy farms on Point Reyes and I just happened to spot this new little calf! Momma was just finishing cleaning her. Very sweet.
Looks like you had a lovely time at the coast! There is certainly something magical about the ocean and the seashore. Marvelous images, as always. Loved all the captions, but #451 made me laugh out loud!
Hi Gunta, Thanks very much. It is such fun to have this place so close to the city. I feel like I’m in a different world up there…serene, yet wild. I’m so glad you enjoyed my hike by the sea. I usually don’t spend much time with all the cows but the light was so good on them! I’m very pleased you LOL’d at #451…🤣my kind of woman!
Thanks very much, Sue! It sure was a day filled with variety. Glad you like Two, especially, a favorite that I think captures the wild feel of that hike out to the point. 🙂
That second photograph is my favourite – such a powerful capture – beautiful 🔆😊

I do love the feeling of wide open space in the first photo with the path leading our eye outwards. A wonderful place to wander in and photograph.
