For New Zealand

When Great Trees Fall

When great trees fall,

rocks on distant hills shudder,

lions hunker down

in tall grasses,

and even elephants

lumber after safety.

When great trees fall

in forests,

small things recoil into silence,

their senses

eroded beyond fear.

Landscape, Nature, New Zealand

Morning, Lake Matheson

When great souls die,

the air around us becomes

light, rare, sterile.

We breathe, briefly.

Our eyes, briefly,

see with

a hurtful clarity.

Our memory, suddenly sharpened,

examines,

gnaws on kind words

unsaid,

promised walks

never taken.

Great souls die and

our reality, bound to

them, takes leave of us.

Landscape, Nature, New Zealand

Silence, Milford

Our souls,

dependent upon their

nurture,

now shrink, wizened.

Our minds, formed

and informed by their

radiance,

fall away.

We are not so much maddened

as reduced to the unutterable ignorance

of dark, cold caves.

Landscape, Nature, New Zealand

Punakaiki

And when great souls die,

after a period peace blooms,

slowly and always

irregularly. Spaces fill

with a kind of

soothing electric vibration.

Our senses, restored, never

to be the same, whisper to us.

They existed. They existed.

We can be. Be and be

better. For they existed.

  1. Excellent post. gorgeous landscapes! Morning, Lake Matheson is my fav, beautiful landscape, composition and monochromatic tonality.

  2. Touching and moving words!

  3. Such a moving memorial tribute Jane. As you wrote to me this is such a “sad world” at the moment. We must all express our solidarity and support at times like these as we try to do in our own small but hopefully meaningful ways. Thank you for all the images and words in your moving post.

  4. WOW…absolutely gorgeous shots …gorgeous words….heart warming…thank u!!

  5. Oh Jane what a beautiful tribute. Angelou’s poem says it all, and your photos are a perfect match.

  8. Your pictures and words made me moist-eyed. Hope peace and better sense will prevail.

  9. A beautiful tribute to NZ, Jane.

  10. NZ is a beautiful place. It makes tragedies even more poignant.

  11. Thank you. Needed words. Another sad day for our world.

  12. Reblogged this on johncoyote and commented:

  16. I don’t know what to say or to write … AMAZING Pictures, dear Jane! I have to go there!

  17. The suffering goes on, and the rocks and lakes bear witness. And you do too. Thank you for putting this out there.

  18. Beautiful reflective post… thank you

  19. A beautiful, heartfelt tribute, Jane. ❤ Such troubled times, what a tragedy. I clearly remember the deep impact of the 22/7 on Norway, still so vivid amongst us.
    Stunning images, dear.

    • Thank you for your kind thoughts, Hanne, Yes, it brings up awful, fearful feelings about other tragedies and Norway surely has felt this pain. We must support and help one another in these disturbing times.

  20. Lovely heartfelt tribute to the events of this week, Jane. Wonderful images. Such a difficult time in this world, and we all have to hold on to each other, and look out for one another.

  21. Jane a beautiful combination of images and words. Hope remains with persistent beauty. Thank you for the reminder.

  22. Beautiful tribute to a beautiful country.

  23. Beautiful photos of a beautiful country. Kiwis are some of the most friendly folk I have ever met so it is such a shock to hear of this tragic and horrific event happening in their country. Christchurch has suffered enough through the natural catastrophes. The poem you have used here is most poignant.

  24. Hope! And stunning images, Jane.

  25. Wow, these are beautiful images and moving words. A wonderful post!

  26. Una serie de fotografías preciosa, sin duda unos grandes paisajes bien captados.

Gracias por tus visitas y tus palabras.

Un saludo y feliz fin de semana.

  27. Great, touching and fitting tribute to this beautiful country.

  28. Very nice Jane!! Anne

  29. Oh wow. Jane, between the words (that just squeezed me tight!) and your images, I’m in tears. I’ve traveled this Journey too many times and in reading and viewing your magnificent photographs, even though I am just sliding into Peace once more, the “memory” of the pain I’ve just traversed rose within my Being. Powerful post, one that will stay with me all this day if not longer. I am just so touched. 💞

    • Hi AmyRose, I think sharing about it helps to begin the healing. I’m glad that Maya Angelou’s words touch you as much as they do for me. New Zealand is a beautiful country and Kiwis among the most friendly in the world. Such sadness. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 💞

  30. WOW! Never been, but on our list. See you in a few weeks

  31. So beautiful. It reminds me that there is only one race.

  32. So beautiful, Jane. Your photos and her words. Thank you. Love you – for this too. And, do you know, that photo of the morning at Lake Matheson was one of the things that made me go to NZ. We went to find this view – but it wasn’t there that day. Neither the weather, nor the mountains. That is part of life – being in the right place at the right time…or the wrong place at the wrong time.

We cannot know. But we can stand by each other and support each other in times of despair.

    • How lovely, Ann-Christine, thank you so much. It helps to share, support one another and have hope.
I am not sure if you had told me that connection with this photo and your trip to NZ…that’s wonderful. I’m sorry you didn’t have the same view…it is all about luck with the weather in these amazing places, and you are right – in life. Be well. 💕

  33. Stunning tribute, Jane. Thank you.

  34. I am speechless. I am heartbroken, sad, angry, fearful of where the world is headed once again. Your post is wonderful Jane. Thank you.

  35. Your photos bring back familiar places from our two visits to New Zealand. Both times we stayed with a friend in Christchurch just 4 km from the Masjid al Noor.

  36. Reblogging this to my readers at sister site Timeless Wisdoms

  37. enjoyed this
    beautiful
    imagery 🙂

  38. And the thoughts you have presented are poignant indeed.

  39. Beautiful, Jane. My wife and I think that your Lake Matheson photo is the best Lake Matheson photo we have ever seen.

  40. This is a most Beautiful Tribute to the great Tragedy that the world feels for those who have lost their loved ones in New Zealand.. Fitting words, and images Jane.
Our hearts are with them in this senseless loss. For we are ALL ONE, ❤ And may we unite ever Stronger in Love.. ❤

  41. Wonderful post and pictures.

Love to hear what you think...
