Favorites of 2018

On the 7th anniversary of Jane’s Lens, I am grateful to my family, friends and the blogging community for your continuing support of my work. Your response to my images is encouraging and I appreciate the inspiration from other photographers around the world.

A special thanks to my husband, Bob, whose enthusiasm and keen eye has fortified me. We sure have fun together.

I hope you enjoy my collection of this year’s favorites.

Wishing you all a terrific 2019 filled with happiness, inspiration, kindness and hope.

A 4AM alarm was fine with me in order to see the phenomenon of the Super Blue Blood Moon and Lunar Eclipse. It was exciting to photograph the changing color and light of the night sky with the grand finale of the eclipsed moon setting behind the Golden Gate.

Goodnight Moon

A welcome rain hit San Francisco in February and I thank my husband for urging me to get out of the car and walk to the water by the bridge. Luckily, I had my umbrella balanced on my head and camera in hand when this man suddenly appeared and ducked into the cafe. It was the only shot I made. Phew.

A Hard Rain

One of our favorite day trips is to Point Reyes National Seashore. The autumn colors in the succulents lining the shore were dazzling.  Fortuitously, a women in her VW Bug rolled up and capped the day with a quintessentially California moment. Within minutes, the fog rolled in and obscured the entire scene.

I had to laugh when I saw “life imitating art” at the David Hockney exhibit at LACMA.

Sitting with Hockney

Speaking of moments that made me smile, while waiting for my train in Tokyo this Japanese cleaning crew gave me a photographic gift. It reminds me of a Wes Anderson movie.

The Crew

Hudson River Park is a favorite spot to get some exercise and photos when we’re in NYC. I’m a fan of backlit subjects and silhouettes and this scene in the midst of the busy city was a perfect greeting.

Hudson Afternoon

Big Sur is a photographic playground. The light and colors this evening were extraordinary as the sun set and the moon rose over the pines.

Goodnight Big Sur

I am compelled to document this iconic old fishing boat since it has almost met its match with the weather. She’s hanging in there and deserves a nice portrait.

The Point Reyes

I’m working on a series of rainy window shots from my apartment and this little red car wins.

Red Car

This image, for me, captures the feel of San Francisco at night. I am fascinated by the variety of buildings – classic Victorian to modern apartments –  and the geometry of the lighted windows nestled in the steep hillsides of the city.

Night Life

I chose this close-up for the memory as much as the result. The meditative feeling I had while making the photograph is indelible – it was just me, the subject and the creative process.

Imogen Seizes the Day

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Thanks so much for viewing my images. I wish you a creative and inspiring new year.

  5. Reblogged this on Giai01's Blog and commented:

  6. Ohh, Jane, these are spectacular! I won’t even attempt to choose the favourite since this is such a nicely balanced selection. I like it how you include luck as an element. But most of all I’m surprised by the granddaughter because you give out the air of say 40 tops. 🙂 Enough for grandkids, I suppose. 😉 I wish you another most excellent year! And I love the quote too. Not a bad way to live.

    • Hi Manja, Thank you so much for your enthusiastic reaction to these. Means a lot. (Especially that you think I am young! 😃)Glad you enjoyed the diversity of images and my favorite Emerson quote… I like to revisit it at the start of each year. Wishing you a fantastic 2019 filled with inspiration and fun adventures!

  7. Jane, somehow I had missed this post… and am glad I found it today… As always, your work is inspirational – and your quotes do the same! The Emerson that you included here is wonderful. Most of the photos I remember seeing – which means they were worth of being remembered! And the comments for each are appreciated…
Happy 2019 to you! Best wishes for more Light to follow!

    • Hi Larry, How nice to read your reaction and that you remember the images. Thank you so much. The Emerson quote is a longtime favorite and a good reminder at the start of the year. Appreciate you viewing my work and I wish you a fruitful and inspiring 2019, too! 🙂

  8. Great photos! They really reminded me of our trip to California a few years ago and also the trip to Tokyo that we can’t wait to take!

  11. You are a stunning Photographer..Amazing pics.

  12. Wow! You always put so much heart and soul into your images, captions and comments Jane! Since I like humour – The shot of Sitting with Hockney is fantastic! – as well as The Crew! For colour burst, my vote goes to On the Vine. California Living is a wonderful nostalgic shot – the hippy beeetle amidst all the flowers. I love The Point Reyes monochrome – so rich! And of course – the dearest to you is Imogen! (Did I ask you before if she was named after Imogen Cunningham?)

    • Hi Michael, Thank you! I really appreciate your thoughts on these favorites. Happy you enjoyed them. Our granddaughter isn’t named specifically for Cunningham but she has always been a favorite for me so it’s a special connection. Wishing you a fantastic 2019!

  13. What a wonderful and varied retrospective of the past year! I look forward to more in 2019.

  14. My favorite part might be, “We sure have fun together.” 🙂 That being said, what a perfect quote, and I like your brief explanations – they really add to the whole.
The old boat, Point Reyes, is a beautifully finished piece of work, and I love the rainy window view below that one for its liveliness. The B&W flower does convey the feeling you describe, and having felt that more than once, I appreciate that image so much. Then there’s Imogen – YES! I would follow her anywhere, too.
Congratulations on 7 years! 2018 was filled with good times and great images, that’s clear. Warm wishes for another year of spreading easy breath and good cheer, Jane.

  20. Of your 2018 favorites, I must say your nightscape of SF (“Night Life”) is one of your best and one I like very much. It’s a gorgeous canvas of life in the big city. Was it taken through a very clean window or from the roof?

    • Hi David, Thank you very much. That was a beautiful moment for me and I’m so glad you like it. I shot this on through an open window on a tripod. 🙂 Wishing you a fantastic 2019 filled with inspiration. Looking forward to seeing where your lens takes you.

  21. absolutely BRILLIANT Jane!!! JUST WOW!! I consider myself lucky to be a recipient of your great talent!! Thank U for the wonderful moments!! happy new year to u two!!

  25. Jane!! Your photography is outstanding!! WOW! And your lenses have me drooling! F2’s and F2.8’s! I KNOW how expensive those are! How talented you are in so many ways not only on the field but in the editing room. Loved each and every image!! I’ve been here quite a long time just soaking the Beauty I’ve seen with your photography. Thank you so much for sharing this part of you with us. In so many ways you are doing exactly what I dream of doing …. someday! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

    • Thank you, Amy Rose. I really appreciate your enthusiastic response and taking the time to let me know. Yes, those lenses are fun to work with and lately, most of the time, I just do some light editing in LR. You do beautiful work and I look forward to seeing where your lenses take you in the new year!

  26. Standing O up here 👏👏👏

  27. Reblogged this on The Reluctant Poet and commented:

  30. Happy New Year and Happy Blogoversary Jane. These are great shots. Hard Rain is one of my favorites of yours. I hope you have a wonderful year and it there are many more great photo ops to come!!

  31. Wow. Stunning images. And it seems with some of them serendipity matched preparation.

  32. Great images. We’re going to California and are having trouble deciding whether to go south or north of SF….your photos of Big Sur and Point Reyes haven’t helped one bit 😂😂😂. Best wishes for 2019!

    • Hi Andy, Ha! Thank you– then my job is done. 🤣You’ll need to do both! You can’t go wrong with either but I’d have to vote for that drive to Big Sur. It is amazing. All the best in 2019!

  33. 2018 was a very good year for your love of photography. These are so beautiful, Jane. Thanks for sharing them at the same time. It is a shower of inspiration and a reminder of why we love to live in the Bay Area.

  34. Jane: as usual the images are great. All are evocative, some for technical reasons, some for artistic impact. Hard to decide my favorite, but I do like the one of your granddaughter. Have a wonderful 2019, and hope to see you.

    • Thanks so much, Jack. I really appreciate your encouragement and have enjoyed our discussions and collaboration over the years. Looking forward to more of your gorgeous nature photos in the new year. Wishing you and Katie a terrific 2019!

    Sent from my iPhone

  39. A wonderful and varied selection – I particularly liked the beetle, and the old fishing boat. Thank you!

  42. Love your photos, Laurie. Cheers to more fabulous photos. Happy blogging anniversary.

  43. Your 2018 favorites are wonderful images.

  44. I have enjoyed your blog for as long as I have been following it. Your work is beautiful, informative and sets a very high standard for the rest of us photographers. Keep tip the inspirational work.

  45. Great images Jane, but it’s the street photography/candid portrait ones that stand out for me……you really do have a great eye for those – Hard Rain, Sitting with Hockney, The Crew for example

    • Hi Mark, Your comment means a lot– thanks very much. I find that I really love observing people in various situations– although I don’t often think of myself as a street photographer, I find those images to be the most rewarding (I do love being stealthy). I really appreciate your thoughts and I wish you a creative and adventurous new year.

  46. All just stunning! Liked the inclusion of specs. The Emerson quote should be on everyone’s refrigerator.

    • Thanks very much, Kathy! Glad you also enjoyed the narrative/specs and my favorite quote…I agree about that! Wishing you an inspiring and creative 2019 and looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful work.

  47. Fabulous shots. You need your own gallery!

  48. Wonderful end of the year portfolio. Good job! Reminds me of my favorite quote by Edward Steichen: “Photography is a major force in explaining man to man.”

  49. They’re incredible collection. And happy New Year..

  50. What an amazing collection, dear Jane! I can’t decide which one is best – they are all wonderful! The bettle with the surfboard is great!

  51. Wonderful collection, a nice way to start my day. Thank you.

  52. Some great images, Jane! Love that VW Beetle, and sitting with Hockney was well observed!

  53. Always say it but these are stunning, have another good one in 19 Jane!

  54. So nice to see these shots again, you have a wonderful varied catalogue of images; each and every one a stunner. I look forward to 2019 with you.

  55. So much variety, and so much beauty, Jane! I was smiling and then gasping in awe at some of your shots. 🙂 🙂 Wishing you another fulfilling, happy year!

  56. You are such an amazing photographer. This collection shows such diversity in your images! I love the mini stories you have told so that we get a sense of the magical moment.
I am a huge Hockney fan and really enjoyed that one!

    • Hi Ali, Thank you so much. I enjoy looking back on the year– helps gain insights about the work and also helps me remember what I did! 😃 Glad you enjoyed the commentary and the Hockney — that moment really cracked me up. Wishing you a terrific 2019 and I look forward to seeing where your camera takes you.

  57. I so absolutely adore your photos, Jane!

  58. Loved each and every one, as well as your thoughts. So glad I stumbled upon this tonight. Beautiful images that inspire…Thanks for sharing.

  59. Happy 7th. You hardly seem old enough to have a granddaughter.

  60. Jane, a splendid grouping of eclectic images. I’m still most fond of The Hard Rain. It really speaks to the moment. Second would be Hudson Afternoon. The simplicity of this silhouetted photograph with its foreground of the person lying on the park benches, the mid-ground of the city and the beauty of the God’s light bursting out of those dramatic clouds is my second choice. However, it does rival The Hard Rain.
Happy New Year! May 2019 be another successful year for you.

    • Hi Tim, How lovely of you to take a moment to let me know your reaction to these – I remember your nice comment about Hard Rain when I first published it. Thank you so much for your encouragement. I’ve really enjoyed your work over the years and look forward to where your lens takes you in 2019. Much happiness in the new year to you and yours.

  61. You’re certainly an inspiration. So wonderful to revisit some of my favorites in this collection as well as those I hadn’t seen previously. To me, Night Life captures the quintessential feel of San Francisco with all the buildings jostling for a better view. The shot of Imogen is beyond precious!

Wishing you and Bob another amazing year and looking forward to more of your beautiful images.

  62. ,love them all but especially the VW bug photo!

  63. Congratulations on the anniversary, Jane! Looking back at your beautiful images of the previous year has my mouth watering at the beauty you’ll be sharing with us in the year ahead. May 2019 be kind to you and your loved ones!

  64. Happy Blog-a-versary Jane. Beautiful selection. Especially liked the SF night scene.

  65. Beautiful images Jane! I can see why these were your favorites.

    • Hi Michael, Thanks so much! It’s a valuable exercise, I think, each year. Plus, it helps me remember where I’ve been. 🙂 I have enjoyed your work as well, and wish you a wonderful 2019.

      • You’re most welcome. I agree it’s good to look back and see how you have progressed as a photographer. I always enjoy looking at your pictures and I’m going to try and be more active in the blogosphere this year! Cheers to an exciting 2019 for you!

  67. Happy birthday to your sit. Incredible collection of your favorites.

  68. Oh what a magnificent collection! Every photo a gem.
Happy New Year Jane. May 2019 be all you could wish for.

  69. So many truly wonderful shots, but I keep coming back to the attendant at the Hockney exhibition. The composition is fantastic.

    • Hi Su Leslie, So glad you like the collection and that one in particular. Images that make me laugh…the gallery perspective made it quite a challenge to get it right. Thanks so much and wishing you a fabulous 2019.

  70. hi jane, a wonderful and interesting review of year 2018.
    regards robert

  71. Jane, this is such a lovely collection of your amazing images of 2018. I always admire your inspirational work. Wish you a most creative year of 2019
