  1. Beautiful photos! They remind me of the first backpacking trip I took ever. I was lucky and had sunshine the whole time but the fog adds this moody feel to the place. Would like to go back when it is foggy.

    • Hi Exploring CA, Sorry for my late reply to your wonderful comment- thanks so much. I was at Point Reyes yesterday and was looking back on this day. It’s a magical place! And it was pretty, pretty foggy! 🙂

  5. That quote from Camus caught me off guard. I don’t know why… I guess, I never thought of him as romantic but the quote fits the scenery. Both are beautiful. 🙂

  6. truly wonderful/ the VW bug shot is my fav here.
    the colors…
but each photo was so tasty.
and side note – we drove to Florida last month and three times I saw a man in old Corvette – had CA plates and he was in the panhandle – I WISH i grabbed a photo – that car on the highway and so far away from CA – would have been a nice shot – oh well…

    • Hi Yvette- Love that you spotted a Californian in a Corvette. A cross-country road trip! Happy you enjoyed these colorful photos…it was quite a day and that VW was such a gift. Thank you for stopping by! 🙂

      • ugh – and wish I grabbed a photo! the car was so small – no tinted windows – a bit of chrome – must have been in good shape to road trip that far
        __
and the VW is also nice and moody with one surfboard – freedom and solitude vibe

  13. I love it, Jane! You might guess my favorites – but maybe not. First, the Ice Plant and Driftwood – that one you guessed, right? California Livin’ for the fun of it, and perfect palette, Walk Into the Fog because I just love it! It’s nice to see the elk heard (a lot of males together!) and the plovers all facing the same direction (into the wind, I imagine) and that last image is the perfect finale. Beautiful!

  14. I didn’t know that are had such pretty fall colors. It reminds me a little bit of the Alaskan tundra that turns to a sea of red. Nice captures.

  15. “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” No who can argue with that!!

The car (because its colours are echoed all round) is special, but then the vibrancy in every photo must be admired.

In the end after much debate between my left and right brain, dune and wave is my favourite

  16. OMG, Jane… that first shot put me right back to the days of traveling that very same coast in my orange VW bug… in way back times (1974+) 😀 You do the coast proud and capture it so well. It put me right back in the picture, so to speak.

As for other favorite images… the plovers made my heart sing to see so many spread out on the beach. The ice plants (esp. the 2nd shot) was sheer artistry! Then again so are all you images! You do make it hard to pick a favorite.

    • Hi Gunta, I love that it brought you back to your freewheeling VW bug days– although, you seem pretty freewheeling now, too. 🙂 And, that the same scenes speak to us…I was thrilled to see that large flock of plovers. I had too long a lens on my camera to get them all. Really glad you enjoyed these nature moments. Thanks so much!

    • Hi Eliza, I was surprised how many trees were turning in Marin where it’s usually quite warm. Yes, perhaps the drought does hasten it. It is quite chilly on Point Reyes so that makes sense. It was so windy when we were there it was almost comical trying walk and shoot photos. Happy you enjoyed these…I love the ice plant, as you can see. Thank you!

Fabulous autumn colours of a very different landscape – we are so used to seeing trees – so nice to see the coast.

  43. Oh, that scenic California coast. You’re fortunate to have it so close at hand as a ready subject.

Three years ago I ran across an English version of the Camus quotation. I went hunting and finally tracked it down. It turned out to be from his 1944 play Le malentendu (The Misunderstanding), but the original is somewhat different from the various English versions I found online. In the play, the character Martha asks “Qu’est-ce que l’automne?” (“What is autumn?”). The character Jan replies: “Un deuxième printemps, où toutes les feuilles sont comme des fleurs.” (“A second spring, when all the leaves are like flowers.”) The version you found drops the question; gloms the two sentences together; changes the plurals to singulars; and omits the word comme (like) and the comma before it, thereby turning the original simile into a metaphor.

  44. I THINK I NEED TO GET RID OF MY LUXURY – ALMOST DRIVES ITSELF CAR – and make all the people who see me ( with my
BEETLE AND SURFBOARD on top HAPPY! or they may be saying what in the hell is that old bag roaring around in a beetle????? She must have escaped from the home!
