“And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’
But I’ll know my song well before I start singin’
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall”
~Bob Dylan
“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.”
~Roger Miller
“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.”
~Langston Hughes
These images were made with my Fujifilm X-T2 in Acros film simulation and the Fujinon 35mm f/2 prime lens which, fortunately, is known for its weather resistance.
Your photos testify to high class! I love them, especially the first, second, fifth and last one. But they are all good!
Warm regards, Heidi
Thanks so much, Heidi. I really appreciate your encouraging comments. 😊
Love these beautiful captures, Jane!
Thanks so much, Arv! It was great to take advantage of the rare rainstorm. Glad you enjoyed them!
Rain can create magic with photos. And it’s perfect for black and white rendering, as these images show. It’s a lovely series of photos, full of atmosphere and tactile wetness.
Hi Otto, How nice to read your reaction to this series– thanks very much. It was one of those times where luck played a role– I was astounded to find people walking in this torrential rainstorm. Glad you enjoyed them– it was an exciting day of photography.
Great! Wonderful! Magnificant! I love these pictures! Each of them!
Sunny winter greetings from Berlin, Daniel
Thank you, thank you, Daniel! I really appreciate your thoughts. Hope you are doing well.
Jane, you’re so awesome.
Wow, thanks so much, Allan! 🙂
Moody & beautiful. The first & the City Rain are my favs.
I always liked another rain shot you did some time ago – I think you were driving on the bridge & used your cell phone. .. Droplets & a piece of the bridge. Minimal but really interesting.
Thanks for getting out there & sharing this rainy day shots with us !
Hi Diane,
So glad you like these. And, that you remember that bridge and rain shot. I had a monochrome version ready for this post and decided it didn’t quite fit in the series, but it is a favorite. Thank you for enjoying these and remembering that one!
Impressive shots!
Thanks so much, Ronja. Appreciate your visits and follow. 🙂
You had the right tools for the job, Jane, and a good thing that was! I love your opening shot, and the Eucalyptus trees. I know we need the rain, but oh, it can get dreary….the sun just came out, I should make tracks!
Thanks, Lynn. Our rainy days have been few and far between, unlike last year! Hope you enjoy a little sunshine. Appreciate your visit and hope you had a great weekend.
Excellent mood in these captures 🙂
Thank you, Joshi. It was an amazing morning. 🙂
I got poison oak in San Francisco – would love to see a photo retrospective of rashes! 😉
Oh no, Jay! But a funny idea. 🙂 It’s everywhere on the trails…so sorry!
Wonderfully moody shots Jane and I also love the words here.
Thank you, Miriam. I was happy that I hung in there in the downpour and was lucky there were some people around! It was an exciting and fruitful morning. Glad you enjoyed them.
Lovely images and they work well in B&W. (Suzanne)
Thank you, Suzanne. It was an exciting morning- happy you like them in black and white. Nice to hear from you and wishing you and Pierre and terrific 2018.
Such an inspiring gallery Jane; the beauty monochrome with each one telling a story 🙂
What a lovely compliment, Andrew. It’s what I hope for in an image. Thanks so much and hope you are doing well.
Wow! These images are amazing. They’re dreamy, clean but crisp! Nice work 👍🏻
Thank you, Liz. So glad you enjoyed them. Appreciate you stopping by.
Lovely monochromes. 💙
Thank you, Imelda. Is sure was that kind of day. Hope you had a wonderful new year.
That is just awesome Jane, how you made a rainy day become so beautiful.
Thank you, Maria. It was a magnificent morning! Hope you are having a great start to your year.
Jane, even your “gray day”, “weather not cooperating” images are truly beautiful.
Such a wonderful mood in each one of these.
Hi Lisa, Thanks! I was happy that the people with umbrellas were cooperating nicely. 🙂 Pleased you enjoyed them.
You prove with your pictures that rain can be something beautiful! Thank you and greetings.
Hi Cecilia, I’m so glad you enjoyed this rainy series. Thanks very much. Warm greetings to you, too.
You got some serious rain, Jane. Lovely shots, they look great in b&w!
Hi Dina, We sure did! Nothing like last year but we’ll take what we can get. Pleased you enjoyed this very monochrome day. Thanks so much.
I love the photo in the Presidio, Jane. Such beautiful shades of grey from white to black.
Ω
Hi Allan, Thank you. I love those trees, especially in fog. It was a perfect monochrome day- glad you enjoyed.
Loved the mood of this post. Dylan’s lyrics set the stage. Especially liked the light you captured in the eucalyptus photo.
Hi Jane, Thanks very much. I had the Dylan song in my head as I was shooting. It was quite a day. The trees in the Presidio were mysterious and beautiful.
What a great quote – some people walk in the rain, others get wet. I love the rain, just not the freezing kind.
Thank you, Lisa. I love that one, too. This was the kind of rain you would enjoy. 🙂
Great images Jane. I love the mood. A Hard Rain is just fantastic.
Thank you so much, Göran. Hard Rain was a lucky way to start the day. 🙂
In this case, very important to have gear that can stand up to the elements!
So true, Amy! I managed to juggle an umbrella while I was shooting. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
A Hard Rain lands on the top of the ratings list for me. The angle of the umbrella nicely fits with the angle of the Headlands hills in the background. Then you add the lines in the building, pier and the bridge cables and they all drive your eye to the umbrella and the person carrying it. Jane, I hope you didn’t get too wet waiting for him to walk by.
Thanks, Tim. That was such a serendipitous moment. I had just arrived and had barely gotten my settings right and he whisked by- I only got one shot and he was gone into the Warming Hut. Happened so fast!
That is a terrific observation about the umbrella and headlands. Now you know, I didn’t plan it. 🙂 I really appreciate your kind thoughts. It was an exciting morning of rainy day moments.
Jane you’re welcome. Sometimes chance works in our favor. In this case it did in spades.
These are absolutely stunning Jane! wow. They are perfect too in black and white. Gorgeous collection!
Hi Nicole, Thank you! It was a black and white kind of day. Very exciting to photograph. Glad you like them!
cool
Thanks so much, Hendrik. Appreciate your visit.
I love this series by the feelings it conveys.
I compare it with a good jazz concert, where every note, every musical put us in contact with the magical world of creativity.
Hi Marcelo, Thank you so much. You have a wonderful way with words. It’s very nice that this series sparked such a beautiful metaphor. Hope you had a great weekend!
So good to see images of my favorite city. Clearly, you are one who walks in the rain. (And doesn’t just get wet.)
Thanks, Melissa! It’s so nice of you to stop by. Glad you enjoyed a peek of SF in the rain.
Ah, yes, a waterproof camera and lens is definitely a necessity in this type of weather. Brilliant images of an area of San Fran I know. The first image though is very much my favourite.
Thank you, Jude. Happy you know this spot– it’s not often under water! Appreciate your thoughts.
Really enjoyed the whole series. The black and white gives you a real feel for a rainy day. Good work!
Thank you, Kathleen. You know that spot well and it was fabulous in the rain. Hope you are doing well!
Jane, love this post. The dark, wet, and moody scenes really called for the b-w treatment. 🙂 My favorites are the last 3, especially the raindrops on the window, “City Rain.”
Thanks very much, Larry. It was a monochrome day and exciting to photograph. When we get the rare rain, I am obsessed with droplets on my window. 🙂 Pleased you enjoyed.
Great shots Jane, especially the first one……very nice indeed.
Thanks so much, Mark. I was amazed there were people out and about in that downpour. A little luck always helps!
Una Serie Impresionante, Todos Los Días Con Lluvia Tienen Un Encanto Especial. Un Saludo.
Muchas gracias, Jose. Eso es muy cierto.Un Saludo. 🙂
J’adore cette série !
Merci beaucoup, Latourte! 🙂
oh my…I add my voice to the chorus of admirers.
Thank you, Paula. This was a test in seeing the tones and light. Glad you enjoyed them.
Gorgeous moodiness…rainy days is only good for farmers and photographers ;-D Love them all, but my favorite is the first one!
Thanks, Ann-Christine. That’s a funny saying. This favorite spot by the bridge is great in any weather– happy you enjoyed!
♥
I would love some of that glorious rain over here Jane. It has been long days of hot sun and scorching strong winds no rain in sight. Your photos were mana to my gardening soul
Hi Pauline, I have been reading about your extreme temps. So sorry. Your plants must be suffering along with you. Glad I brought the feeling of rain to you and that you enjoyed the series. Thank you and stay as cool as possible!
Amazing BW series of rainy shots, Jane. Hard to pick a favourite. That Fujinon lens does seem very much weather resistant. I’ve always hesitated shooting in the wet because well, my gear is not water proof and the thought of any water dropping on my lens horrifies me 😀 Hope you didn’t get too wet taking all of these shots. Maybe you shot from under shade or an umbrella 🙂
Hi Mabel, Happy you enjoyed this rainy morning. I was definitely hunkered down under my umbrella! Exciting morning of photography. Thanks so much.
Stunning images, Jane. Like the first one most. Good to see you like the Fuji. My X-T1 starts to look used by now. But it will retire with me. Like the title of your post too. Happy days. Reinhold
Thank you, Reinhold. It was a great day for monochrome and all I could think of was Dylan’s tune. Is your beautiful work shot mainly with the X-T1? Glad you stopped by and I hope you had a great weekend.
Nearly X-T1 only. Sometimes the old, first model of the X100. But Fuji rules my day. 😁
Excellent! 🙂
I am currently in East Germany at the East Sea. Scouting more northern light. It is freezing cold, but we had a sunny day.
Had to chuckle at the plug you gave Fujifilm for weather resistance! Or was that meant for the lens? Great, marvelous moody images of one of my favorite sites. Keep ’em coming! 😀
Hi Gunta, And I’m not even a Fuji ambassador…yet! 🙂 The f/2 X series lenses are touted as that. I had an umbrella so I didn’t put it to an extreme test. Pleased you like my rainy day– you must be pretty used to them in your neck of the woods. Thanks so much and hope you had a great weekend!
I love rainy weather as long as you’re dressed for it. Though I’ll admit that last winter was a bit much since we didn’t have many of the gorgeous days between the storms. Oddly or counterintuitively it often gets warmer when we have rain. They’ve named it the Pineapple Express apparently when the moisture driven winds come out of Hawaii. Some of our coldest nasty winds seem to come down out of Alaska in the summertime. The tourists are not happy! 😀
Yes, I learned about the Pineapple Express when we moved here!
The classic summer tourist wear are SF sweatshirts that they are forced to buy when they’re freezing. 😁
Just love A Hard Rain, but have to say A Walk in the Rain makes me nervous. Those people look vulnerable don’t they! Very nice in the black and white!
Thanks, Sharon. I think it’s the angle which makes the wharf look narrow– good observation! Glad you agree they work well in black and white– it was a fairly colorless day. Happy New Year in your new home!
Wonderful Jane! I especially love the first one and Fort Point.
Thanks, Susan! Such a great spot, isn’t it? Glad you like them.
Rain provides a good photographer some great pictures. Love ’em.
Thanks, Bruce. It was worth making the effort….it was pouring buckets!
such a fun take on the rain theme – images and words….
and my two favorite images of the post are the Eucalyptus and city rain.
and then the quotes, well the Langston Hughes ones reminds me of perspective and how you were reminding us of ours….
Thanks very much, Yvette. I am happy that those images and the quote spoke to you. It’s always interesting to see what stands out for the viewer. Much appreciated and wishing you happiness in the new year!
thanks and happy new year to you too
((hard to believe it is 2018 – yikes))
Nice, moody series, Jane. I esp. like the foggy forest.
Thanks, Eliza. Please you like them and the Eucalyptus groves in the Presidio are one of my favorite place to wander. 🙂
As always you have excelled in your ability to capture the micro second of the mood the rain has given you to give to us
Thank you so much, Elliot. Your comment means a lot. Glad you enjoyed these.
Nice photos, but nasty weather. We lived right by those eucalyptus on the Presidio. I hated the smell!
Hi Linda, It really was quite serene and amazing. Funny that you don’t like the smell of eucalyptus- you must have been tortured, it’s so strong at times. 🙂 Glad you enjoyed the photos, thanks!
Never been a rainy day girl but you sure gave me a new perspective ! Great shots
Thanks, Linda. Glad I gave you a new viewpoint. It was quite beautiful to be rained on in that spot. 🙂
fabulous black/white creations! Thanks for sharing with us!
Hi Stef, Thanks so much! Happy you enjoyed these and I’m glad you stopped by.
I love these…I find them SO calming….and mysterious…..especially liking ‘a hard rain’👍
Thank you, April. It was very quiet except for the raindrops. It was mysterious and calm…well said.
Lovely rainy day photos. Black and white enhances the raininess. I can hear and see a number of stories in ‘A Hard Rain’. I enjoy the curiosity of who, where and why. I also like ‘Fort Point’, the way my eye travels out to the open space and returns to the water flowing out of the wall. The rhythm of traveling between the known, tangible present and the unknown fog in the distance. A pleasant flow between these two spaces.
Thank you so much, Arati, for your lovely response to the images. I really appreciate it. It was an exciting monochrome day in SF. I’m glad you stopped by.
My pleasure. I look forward to visiting again
A beautiful set. It’s more Manchester than San Fran. Thank goodness for the weather-resistant lens!
Thanks, Mike. Ha! So true…you must have felt right at home. These days are few and far between this year. Glad you enjoyed this series.
terrific shots Jane, very atmospheric. Good to see SF getting much needed moisture! Maybe Santa brought u some new glass, no ?
Thank you, Tina. It was a super monochrome day and yes, much needed rain.
When you were asking me about the Fuji, you may have forgotten that I mentioned I got this 35 f/2 last fall. Great lens. Very compact with great clarity. Looking at the 90mm in this series, too. BTW, the film simulations like Acros, are really nice on the X-T2.
Cudos to you for braving the rain! Great shots!

Thanks, Sue! It was raining so hard and although it was daunting, I was really glad I did.
hi jane wonderful pictures my favorite is the first one.
greetings robert
Thanks, Robert. That was a memorable and lucky moment. Glad you enjoyed.
Great shots, Jane! The B&W sure conveys the appropriate mood and context. A Hard Rain is my favorite, with City and Eucalyptus close seconds.
Thanks so much, Daniel. It was a monochrome day in SF. So glad you enjoyed those images in particular and I really appreciate your visit.
Absolutely love that first one, Jane. And Walk in the Rain. 🙂 🙂 I always loved Bobby too.
Thank you, Jo. This was an exciting day in the rain. Couldn’t resist Bob! Glad you like this one. 🙂
Great shots.
Thanks so much, Livingfully. Glad you like them. 🙂
You’re welcome 🙂
Great moody shots Jane 🙂 Isn’t it nice to have a weatherproof camera and lens ?
Thanks, Joe. Yes, indeed. It was quite freeing. 🙂 Pleased you like these shots, it was an amazing moment. Thank you again for recommending the 35mm – I love it.
