“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.”
~Langston Hughes
“Rain is grace; rain is the sky descending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life.”
~John Updike
LOVE these, missing the rainy days!
Thank you, Boonbron.
Amazing photos. I always feel like I am the only one that actually likes rain! The smell of the earth after rain is amazing.
Hi Fanny, I am with you on that! Love that smell. One of my favorite places is the rainy Olympic Peninsula. Thanks so much for your comment and I’m glad you enjoyed these.
This is great… ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ
Thanks, Eliza! An interesting challenge to do abstract images.
Wow these photos are really great i think! ๐
Hi Lisah, Thanks so much. I enjoy shooting these. Glad you like them.
So lovely!
Thanks, Karen! Your work inspires me in this way. Happy you enjoyed them – much appreciated.
Window shots!!! A question: do you favor one window over another, or do you choose a window depending upon what you see?
Hi David, Great question. Always looking for the scenes out any window. Thanks for asking! ๐
these r absolutely spectacular!!! I love seeing the gorgeous SF landscapes through the raindrops….u captured each one of them so brilliantly!!!
Hi April, So glad you enjoyed my rainy day images. Hopefully you’ll be out here sometime soon! Thanks so much, as always.
I love these images. An awesome series of San Francisco abstractions.
Hi Otto, I’m so glad you like this series. Thank you– much appreciated.
Terrific series of images Jane.
Thanks very much, Edith. Loving the rain…
Well done!
Thanks so much, Herbert.
The rain adds such a tender and provocative mood to your set of images.
How nicely said, Sally. Thank you very much.
Such lovely images, nice take on the challenge.
Hi Amy, Thanks very much. An homage to our infrequent showers. Glad you enjoyed them.
Lovely, moody shots, Jane. Beautiful work.
Thanks so much, Patti. I am loving the rainfall. Glad you enjoyed it.
Super fantastic shots Jane and what a grand sight that rain is!
Hi Patti, Thank so much! We sure are happy to get a good few days…the city gets a nice bath and the reservoirs are filling. Glad you enjoyed these– much appreciated.
Of course I love these. Looks like we were both in a rainy day frame of mind. That last one, Rooftops, really sings. I like the heavy water and how it has softened the lines and colors.
Hi Patricia, Oooh…have to pop over and see. Happy you like these– I am having fun with them. Thank you!
Oh the rain that slows me down ……. Makes me stop, reflect, regroup, transform…. lovely ..
Hi Linda, Yes, it certainly does. Hope these did the same… thanks so much, friend.
Your beautiful photos make me yearn for a rainy day…minus our mosquito population in the Low Country
Hi Kath- Ha! Your state bird! The rain is few and far between so we are enjoying every drop. Happy you liked this series– thank you!
Interesting idea Jane. Really like the rooftops shot…nice take on the challenge.
Hi Andy, Thanks! It’s a concept I have fun working on, which given how little it rains, doesn’t happen very often. Glad you enjoyed them.
Each of these is so beautifully unique, Jane.
I especially love the first one.
Simply perfect, to me.
Hi Lisa, That’s very kind of you, thanks so much. I was thrilled to catch the first one, have to admit. Glad you liked the style of these. Much appreciated.
I know the bridge from the first photo. Was there last year ๐
Hi Awa, I remember you saying. So glad you’ve seen her! ๐ Thanks.
Brilliant Jane….great idea
Thank you, Mark. I love shooting these- glad you like them. In fact, it’s pouring right now and I shot some more. ๐ Appreciate your visit.
Very nice Jane! Proof that great photos can be had in any kind of weather.
So true, Denise. In fact, sometimes the stormier, the better. Glad you enjoyed – thank you.
I LOVE everything about this rainy day post.
Thanks so much, Jane. Feeling cozy on another rainy day in SF.
Such a creative interpretation of the challenge, Jane. I read the other comments and you mentioned Bob held the wheel. You really had good timing there. From your shots, you do make raindrops and rain look very much different – each raining window is never the same…just as we all stay stuck indoors for different reasons. Maybe we don’t want to brave the rain with an umbrella, maybe we don’t like getting wet, maybe we don’t want to make the hassle walking through water ๐ Beautifully done.
Hi Mabel, Thank you! Just to clarify, I was not driving! He turned the wipers off for me… safety first. Happy you enjoyed this series- I love the challenge of creating these dreamy scenes. Your thoughts are much appreciated. ๐
I add my voice to the chorus. xx
Thanks so much, Paula. xx
By coincidence, yesterday we saw the sun go down beyond the Golden Gate Bridge as we watched from Grizzly Peak Blvd. way up in the hills above Berkeley.
How wonderful! Hope you are enjoying the Bay Area, Steve. Appreciate your visit here. Thanks.
We are enjoying it but the rain and overcast skies have kept me from getting some of the photographs I imagined. You’re fortunate to live in such a picturesque area.
Thanks, Steve. A rare rainy weekend… hope it clears for you!
Thanks for sharing. ๐
Wow, Jane! These are very impressive images! There is something I always love about rain running down a windowpane, or the small water droplets as they just hang there on the glass, and how this distorts and changes the image beyond. You have captured such a wonderful atmosphere here, full of colour and form. I particularly really like the top image of the iconic bridge and that blue hue.
Hi Pete, Thank you! Glad you like the bridge shot– that was a happy capture. Agree, water transforms and creates such beautiful scenes. Appreciate your thoughts.
I love the raindrops on a window pane.
Let me invite you to my blog -o-ween party.

Thanks so much, Jacqueline!
Beautiful series, looking throug raindropped windows allways make me dreaming.
Thank you, Patricia. I was hoping to evoke those cozy rainy day moments.
Dear Jane, I really love your photography, it is totally up to my alley of photography. I am honored to be one of your followers. Did you take those images through a real window or from the car? Have a happy Sunday.
Hi Cornelia, How kind of you to let me know. Thanks so much. I took the first image through my car window (with my husband’s assistance on the wipers) and the others through my apartment window. So glad you like them. By the way, I think I mentioned that your link here isn’t working so I cannot access your blog.
These were really lovely…… hope you weren’t driving!
Hi Mary Lynn, Thank you! I had my trusty driver, Bob– working the wipers as I grabbed my shots between swipes! Glad you enjoyed them. The others were not in moving vehicles. (safety first!)
simple amazing..!!
Hi Mukesh- Thank you! I’m really glad you enjoyed these and appreciate you stopping by.
Always fun to take photos through a car window, especially a moving one . . . and just see what happens. Although I’m sure a little bit more goes into it with your shots than mine. They are all so interesting and colorful. Think my fave was Russian Hill.
Hi Anon, Yes, I love car window shooting… lots of duds but it’s worth the gems you get. Most of these are from my window so, yes, a little less serendipity. Happy you like Russian Hill and the series. Thank you.
Wonderful Jane!
Thank you, Nicole! Celebrating the rain– rainy days are too few and far between. Glad you enjoyed.
Really nice, Jane.๐๐
Thanks, Sharon. Happy times when it rains. ๐
Stunning Images, Jane! Thanks for sharing! Wasn’t there a song that said it never rains in California? But I think it was about SOUTHERN California….The weather looks like it could be in Nuremberg today ๐๐งโ๏ธ
Hi Marcus, Had to sing that in my head for a minute… you’re right…wish we were getting more. Happy you like my rainy series– thanks so much and stay dry! ๐
I am dry now, spending the weekend in Piemont in Northern Italy, the fall landscape in this hilly wine region is sun bathed ๐๐
How lovely! Enjoy and I look forward to your photos.
all so beautiful…all the rain means the earth is healing…always lovely Jane…have a beautiful weekend! smiles hedy
Thank you, Hedy. Yes, indeed, much needed and welcome in California. Happy you enjoyed and I hope you have a wonderful weekend, too.
Have a happy week Jane! โบ๏ธ
Only you could make rain look so good!
You are too kind, Elaine. Thanks so much. ๐
Wonderful as usual. Wish we had some rain so we could try it! Nothing since the hurricane. Big workshop this week. Will let you know how it goes.
Hi Jack, Thanks- we are sure glad to have some! I think you got your share for the time being… looking forward to hearing about your workshop. Enjoy!
Nice series, Jane – a seldom explored perspective – good for you!
Hi Eliza, We don’t see raindrops very often, for sure. Hoping for a wet winter. I’m glad you like these shots– they take some concentration and eyes in a new direction.
Beautifully done. I’ve not had much success with this technique.
Hi Ed, Thank you! There’s definitely more deletes than keeps. ๐ Glad you enjoyed them.
Oh, I’m so glad to read those last comments! I have more than a few times tried to capture this rainy effect, and it usually looks like I just took a really bad photo! Yours are brilliant. (Or not, in a good way!)
I was referring to the comments (now nowhere near mine) that said succeeding at this type of shot is difficult!
Hi Lex, Yes, I knew what you meant and agree, it’s quite a challenge. ๐ I have a fairly low percentage of keepers, for sure. When I’m doing shots that are more planned, I usually switch to manual focus which helps. Happy you like them– thanks a lot!
This is so beautiful! What a great idea… and so well executed!
Am especially in love with the first!
Hi, Noortje. I must give some credit to my husband for his masterful control of the windshield wipers. That was a fun capture. Thanks so much.
I especially like “Rooftops”
Thanks very much, Susan. SF has a great color palette. ๐
These are terrific Jane, I especially like the final capture.
Thanks so much, Tina. These are fun to do.
Shooting through rainy windshield is one of my favorites ways to shoot. I enjoy seeing through your wet windshield.
Hi CP, Certainly a fun challenge and the bridge crossing was a great moment. My window shots are a bit more planned! Glad you enjoyed them, thanks so much.
Awesome shots… Love them!
Thanks, Louise! I enjoy experimenting with these abstracts.
I really like these: particularly the first.
Thanks, Su Leslie. That was a happy capture! ๐
Great photography and perfect quotes for Seattle ๐
Thanks so much, Allison. Yes, indeed, we wish we had some of your rain in CA. ๐ Glad you enjoyed these.
These photos look like water colors, Jane. Good use of the rain drops to gently distort the images. It’s a thin line between success and failure with this technique and you are quite successful today.

Thank you, Allan. Your thoughts are much appreciated and I agree, it’s quite challenging to make it work. Happy you like them.
